62-year-old Zenith Cote pleaded guilty to elevated aggravated assault.
Police say Cote attacked 41-year-old Lisa Curtis of Bar Harbor in April of last year.
According to court records, Cote told several people he wished he had killed curtis.
Witnesses testified Curtis and her daughters are still afraid Cote will return and murder them.
Cote’s supporters say the attack was out of character.
Cote served in Vietnam and had no prior record. His attorney says he suffers from post traumatic stress disorder.
The judge says he took those factors into consideration in assessing the sentence.
Lisa Curtis suffered a punctured lung and intestine in the attack. Her family and friends say they’re disappointed by the sentence, given the severity of the attack.
