Patten Fire

Firefighters workedthroughout the day Sundayto contain a fire that swept through an apartment building in the northern Maine town of Patten.

The building on Main Street contained about 10 apartments, and Fire Chief John Roy says everyone who was home when the fire broke out early Sunday morning has been evacuated. There are no reports of injuries.

Electric power to the town of about 1,000 people has been shut off while fire crews battle the flames and try to keep them from spreading to other buildings.

Roy said the blaze apparently started on the first floor, but the cause is unknown. He said an oxygen tank used by a tenant exploded, blowing out the building’s front windows.

Other homes along Main Street were evacuated as a precaution.
