Diggers are producing plenty of clams but the demand is down. Clammers say there have been wild fluctuations in prices. At one point in may they were getting a dollar and 60 cents a pound.
Two weeks ago it dropped to 80 cents a pound.
The price is rebounding but clammers say it’s not keeping up with rising expenses.
Those involved say the situation is concerning for everyone in the industry from the clammers to the buyers and stores.
Clammers say they make the bulk of their income in the summer months.
They say they’d like to see things turn around but they aren’t sure if that will happen anytime soon.
