Police are warning people to be on the lookout for counterfeit $20 bills after three of bogus bills turned up at the Fayette Town Office.
Maine State Trooper Diane Perkins-Vance said three fake bills were used in a car registration payment on Thursday. The clerk who accepted them thought they looked odd, so the town manager took them to a bank, where they were determined to be counterfeit.
Police said charges won’t be filed because there’s no proof the person who registered the vehicle knew the bills were fake.
Perkins-Vance said the case will be referred to the U.S. Secret Service.
