Girls Hit By Train Speak

Fourteen-year-old Rachel Brown and 13-year-old Destiny Phaneuf appeared this afternoon at a news conference at Maine Medical Center in Portland. From their wheelchairs, they said they’re not going to let what happened to them cast a shadow over their lives.

Brown lost the toes of her right foot and Phaneuf lost part of her left leg below the knee when they were struck by a train May 28. The two, who describe themselves as inseparable friends, live in Lebanon and are eighth-graders at Noble Middle School.

Brown was discharged from the hospital today and Phaneuf is looking forward to returning home a week later. They said they’re looking ahead to adapting to prosthetics and undergoing long periods of physical therapy.
