Unity was the message as the three-day state convention opened at the Augusta Civic Center. Party officials say 2,000 delegates attended this evening and hundreds more are expected when they get down to business tomorrow. A big item will be selecting delegates to the national convention in August.
This evening, Congressman Mike Michaud told the delegates that the party must stand united once the primaries end. And fellow Congressman Tom Allen says it’s time for the party’s undecided ":superdelegates": to make up their minds between Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Gov. John Baldacci has endorsed Clinton. But he says that when the nomination process ends, he’s committed to making sure the Democratic candidate is elected in November.
