Protest on Sears Island

A group of conservationists held a somber protest on sears island in Searsport Saturday.

They held a symbolic wake and funeral march for the future of the island.

They say the land is threatened by plans to build an industrial port.

Folks from Penobscot Bay Watch say the plans will kill the possibility of the island being wild…and will also harm Penobscot Bay.

The protestors say they’re angry that the Sierra Club of Maine has given their approval to the plan…since it would preserve half the island for recreation.

Bay Watch members are pushing the state to hold public hearings for all the communities that could be affected by a possible cargo port on Sears Island.
