So far, they’re coming back in good numbers.
Biologists have been checking the Veazie fish trap for about a week now.
As of Tuesday afternoon, they’ve captured 33 salmon. Last year, it took all of May to reach the same tally.
The fish seem to be moving well, despite the extra high water and the powerful currents from the spring run-off.
According to biologist Mitch Simpson, ":There’s a lot of spill everywhere, and these fish are trying to go up river. And they’re just trying to look for that current going up river. And right now, there’s only like a three foot opening on the fish way. And they’re finding it. That’s a good sign.":
The salmon run will continue through the end of October.
