Economic Woes Equal Boon for Pawn Shops

The higher cost of living is being blamed for the increased business.

About 75% of shop owner John Week’s business is generated from folks borrowing money, and that’s up about a third from previous months.

Week’s owns J.R.’s Pawn Shop and Discount in Waterville.

Weeks is also president of Maine’s Pawnbroker Association, and he says food and fuel prices are putting people in a crunch which is actually helping many pawn shops.
