The number of people getting chemotherapy in Maine has jumped 70% over the last decade.
That’s why the folks at Eastern Maine Healthcare have decided to build a new facility to help care for cancer patients.
The site work is already underway on a hill off Wilson Street in Brewer.
Retired surgeon William Horner, is helping to raise the money that will make the dream a reality.
":My main medical activity was in treating cancer. Particularly breast cancer. And I am also a cancer patient so in a way I have a double investment.": Dr. Horner told TV 5 on Wednesday. ":We’re pretty passionate about it. I can’t think of a more important thing at this time to the people of northeastern Maine.":
Doctor Horner says that virtually every family is effected by cancer, either directly or indirectly.
It’s another reason why he’s working so hard on behalf of the new facility.
If all goes well, the center should be completed in the fall of 2009.
