Howard Murder Trial

Police say that John Turner killed 27-year-old Tad Howard of Ellsworth, and left the body in a ditch last summer in Amherst.

In opening arguments, the state portrayed Howard’s death as an execution.

Prosecutor Andrew Benson told jurors that Howard was a drug dealer.

He says Turner shot Howard to get money to pay off a drug debt.

According to the state, Turner fired a shot through Howard’s arm and shoulder. Then he shot him in the back when he started to stagger away.

A final shot entered Howard’s head.

The defense claims there isn’t enough evidence to prove that scenario.

They say that D.N.A. evidence at the scene proves that a woman was there.

She has not yet been found.

The shotgun used in the killing is also missing.
