Harder to Get Maine Driver’s Liscense

GOVERNOR BALDACCI HAS SIGNED A BILL INTO LAW, MAKING IT HARDER FOR PEOPLE TO GET A DRIVER’S LISCENSE.

THE SENATE APPROVED THE BILL WEDNESDAY NIGHT, AFTER AN HOUR LONG DEBATE.

SUPPORTERS SAY THE BILL BUYS MORE TIME SO MAINERS CAN USE THEIR LISCENSES TO BOARD PLANES AND ENTER FEDERAL BUILDINGS.

BUT OPPONENTS ARGUE THE TIGHTER RESTRICTIONS REPRESENT A THREAT TO PERSONAL FREEDOMS AND ARE BEING FORCED ON MAINE BY THE FEDERAL REAL ID ACT.

GOVERNOR BALDACCI ACKNOWLEDGES IT WAS A DIFFICULT DECISION FOR MANY LEGISLATORS TO MAKE, BUT HE ADDS, LAWMAKERS DID THE RIGHT THING BECAUSE MAINE’S DRIVER’S LISCENSE LAWS HAD BEEN TOO LAX.

HOUSE MEMBERS PASSED THE BILL LAST WEEK, BUT ONLY AFTER REMOVING A PROVISION THAT CALLED FOR A 50 PERCENT INCREASE IN DRIVER’S LISCENSE FEES.
