On Monday night city councilors, by a vote of five to two, agreed to recommend that the Wing Estate be designated a local historic landmark.
The building, located on State Street in Bangor, is owned by Eastern Maine Medical Center.
The hospital is considering several options to redevelop the property, and city councilor Richard Stone says designating the property a historic landmark will help attract potential developers.
":For somebody to get a respectable return on their investment, they need to be sure they can have tax credits and to have those tax credits, it has to be a historic building.": Councilor Stone says he believes more developers will be interested in the property with the new designation.
The Wing Estate was one of two properties being considered by the hospital for redevelopment.
A local resident expects to close on the Robinson House within the next couple of weeks, and will move in with his family.
