Sgt. Mark Schade was pronounced dead at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor shortly after 9 PM. He had been flown there by Lifeflight helicopter after members of the State Police dive team found his body under ice in a small pond behind Sheriff Scott Story’s home in Monroe.
Schade, 42, was a 17 year veteran of the sheriff’s department and was diving alone and off-duty to help the sheriff clean a device to add oxygen toa private pond.
The sheriff, and a second deputy, calledfor help around 4:30PM when they realized Schade was in trouble. Members of the dive team recovered Schade’s body under some ice about ten feet from shore shortly before 7PM.
The state medical examiner’s office will do an autopsy to determine a cause of death.
