Orrington’s fire department transitioned from a volunteer department to a paid department in 2005.
Town manager Carl Young says with all of the required training firefighters have to go through, and the added responsibility of carrying pagers at night, they deserve an increase in their wages:
":Its time, with the demands we’re putting on our emergency service personnel, to adequately compensate them, and in our case, Orrington can afford to do that.":
Also up for debate is whether to turn the part time fire chief position in to a full time job.
Young says the extra funding was a hot button topic at Monday night’s public budget meeting.
Orrington selectmen have a deadline of April 14th to finalize the town’s budget.
