On Wednesday, Governor Baldacci signed a bill that bans the sale of firearms to sixteen and seventeen-year-olds.
The law does allow those youths to buy a gun, if a parent or guardian is present.
":Adults should really know when their child is buying a weapon and to know what frame of mind they’re in, and what the weapon is for.": Said the bill’s sponsor, Democrat Representative Margaret Craven. ":If it is to hurt themselves or others, some mature adult should know about that.":
The new law does not include handguns. It will go into effect this July.
