Maine has until 5 pm Wednesday evening to file an extension with the department of homeland security regarding the Real ID act.
Governor Baldacci says he will have a plan ready.
He agrees there’s a need to make improvements for safety and security, but wants to make sure Mainers are not penalized or inconvenienced.
The department of homeland security wants Maine to stop issuing licenses to illegal aliens and take other specific steps to ensure that people who could pose a threat aren’t trying to gain state credentials.
We are the only state that has not yet been granted an extension to the May 11th enactment date.
