They were all taking part in the 12th annual Girls’ Day event.
More than 100 eighth-graders packed the state house, all wearing their ":girls rock the house and senate": shirts.
Mock public hearings were scheduled along with press conferences. All to show the young women how our government works.
Organizers wanted to stress the important role women play in shaping the state’s public policy.
":Each year after we ask the girls what they learned and how they enjoyed the day they say ‘I never considered being a lawmaker before, now I’m interested.’": Said Sarah Stand, the Executive Director of the Maine Woman’s Policy Center, the group which organized the event.
The annual event brings girls to the capitol from 50 schools around Maine.
