Copper Theft Arrests

Updated 7 years ago

Police say they stole copper pipes from a building in Winterport.

A 911 call came in just after 4 pm on Saturday. Someone reported seeing three men enter the vacant Winterport docks building on Steamboat Ave.

The witness says the men were removing copper pipes and piling them up behind the building.

State troopers, sheriff’s deputies, and Hampden police officers arrived on scene and surrounded the building.

One of the men tried to run, but was arrested: the other two refused to come out, but eventually surrendered when a police dog arrived on scene.

The three are identified as 18-year-old Edward Benner of Searsport, 20-year-old Ryan Hast, also of Searsport, and 19-year-old Seth Gallant of Stockton Springs.

Just two weeks ago, there was a report of a copper theft at the same building.

Police say it’s too early to tell whether the crimes are related.

Copper thefts have become more common in Maine since the price of scrap metal has increased.
