The victim, identified as 30-year-old Christopher Strom of Pittsfield, was a petty officer from Brunswick Naval Air Station.
Trooper Timothy Black said Strom was standing in the driving lane with his arms over his head at 10:15 Monday morning when he was struck by a bread delivery truck.
There is no immediate explanation why Strom was standing in the highway. His car was in the breakdown lane, but troopers say the car was not disabled. Black says Strom had called his girlfriend about 15 minutes before he was struck saying he was on his way home.
The truck driver, 40-year-old Kevin Yarboro of Attleboro, Mass., was not injured. Northbound traffic was detoured for about 3 hours.
