Electric Rates on the Rise

Electric bills are going up in Maine.

Beginning today, most Maine residents and small businesses that

receive standard offer electric service will see their bills

increase between 2.5 and 3 percent. That’s according to the Public

Utilities Commission.

Rates for Central Maine Power’s medium- and large-class business

customers will remain stable. Bills will go up about 3 percent for

Bangor Hydro Electric’s large-class business customers and 7 to 8

percent for its medium-class businesses.

Bills are on the rise because of increasing costs for fossil

fuels.

But some of those costs are being offset by a decline in

electrical transmission and delivery costs through Central Maine

Power and Bangor Hydro.
