Senator Olympia Snowe will be in Brewer Tuesday to preside at a senate hearing on the impact of a new whale protection rule that’s drawing fire from lobstermen.
The rule sets October 1st as the deadline for lobster crews to replace all the rope that connects their boats to their traps.
The feds want the crews to use sinking rope.
The change is designed to prevent endangered Right Whales from getting tangled in the lines.
Lobstermen say the switch would cost them thousands of dollars.
There are also concerns that manufacturers might not be able to produce enough of the new rope to supply the industry.
The hearing had been scheduled for January 14th, but was postponed because of stormy weather.
