The associated press reports that dozens of people testified on Saturday before the Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC) on the plan to create 975 house lots and two resorts on 20-thousand acres around Moosehead Lake.
Speakers were divided on whether the proposal would be an economic boon or an environmental curse.
Some said Plum Creek’s plan would bring jobs, new tourists and new residents to the town. But critics expressed fears that it would forever mar an area that has long served as a mecca for sportsmen and nature lovers.
The LURC will hold four days of party sessions next week, giving lawyers and experts with legal standing in the process an opportunity to question witnesses.
