Police say 55-year-old Steven McKinney, a longtime employee at Sugarloaf USA ski resort, died of blunt force trauma when lumber fell from a poorly secured load onto his car Wednesday evening as he drove on Route 27 in New Vineyard.
The falling timber also totaled another vehicle, but that driver and her 10-year-old daughter narrowly escape injury.
Franklin County Sheriff’s Cpl. Steve Charles said the truck was hauling a load of 12- to 16-foot-long beams when a dozen pieces slid out the back.
The driver kept going, but Charles said his office has received several solid leads that are being investigated.
