A Vermont school teacher will spend three years behind bars for sexually assaulting a seven year old boy from Smithfield in 2005. Andrew Dumont (27) of Saint Johnsbury was sentenced by Judge Nancy Mills on Monday. Dumont is a 1998 graduate of Skowhegan Area High School.
District Attorney Evert Fowle says he’s extremely disappointed with the sentencing. Last year, the legislature imposed new penalties with harsher jail time suggested for sex crimes against children.
Maine law calls for up to thirty years in prison for sex crimes committed on children under 12. The law also lets the judge decide how many years can be suspended from the sentence.
