State police say the bus went out of control at a sharp turn, clipped a utility pole, landed on its side and slid down an embankment in a wooded area while taking children to schoolMonday morning.
Sergeant Julie Bergan says unsafe speed for road conditions is considered the primary cause of the crash. Seven people on the bus were taken to a hospital in neighboring Presque Isle with scrapes and bruises. A total of sixteen people were on the bus at the time.
Mapleton Town Manager John Edgecomb says the local fire department’s rescue unit was first to respond to the crash, and several neighbors helped to remove the students through the emergency door at the rear of the bus.The studentsranged in ages from 5 to 17.
Edgecomb says the road had been sanded, but was wet and partially covered with slush at the time of the accident.
