Investigation Continues into Eastport Man’s Death

Updated 7 years ago

A Machias hospital has launched an internal

investigation into the death of a 61-year-old Eastport man whose

body was found partially buried under fresh snow the day after he

was discharged at his own request.

Officials say Reid Emery left Down East Community Hospital on

Tuesday evening against the wishes of doctors and nurses. His body

was found the following afternoon a few hundred feet from the

hospital.

Although there’s nothing suspicious about Emery’s death, the

case is far from closed. Police reports suggest he froze to death,

but a final determination could take months.

Meanwhile, the hospital is looking into the death. Officials

won’t comment on Emery’s specific situation, but point out that

patients are generally allowed to sign themselves out of the

hospital if they are deemed competent.
