The body of 61-year-old Reid Emery of Eastport was found in a snowbank on Wednesday.
His family says Emery was being treated at Downeast Community Hospital when he decided to check himself out on Tuesday.
They say he was delusional, and had been taking a lot of medications.
Emery left the hospital wearing slippers and a light shirt.
Game wardens were involved in the search. Members of Eastport’s police department also joined in, since Emery’s son is a member of the department.
Emery was found less than 400-feet from the hospital.
Officials don’t suspect foul play, although an investigation is underway.
The hospital can’t prevent adult patients from leaving against medical advice, although they do notify others when it happens.
