Winkin was brought to the hospital Monday in serious condition, after suffering a stroke.
We’re told he was ":out for a walk": on Monday, when he collapsed. A passerby found him, and called for help.
Coach Winkin is 88 years old. He’s been active in Maine athletics for generations.
He’s coached at Colby College, The University of Maine, and currently at Husson College.
Husson spokesperson Julie Green tells TV5 that Winkin was alert and responsive while being treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
Coach Winkin is a Pearl Harbor survivor, and has been named to the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.
He’s one of the most highly regarded coaches in any sport in the country.
