Consolidation Plans on Track

The Baldacci administration says Maine’s

290 school districts appear to be meeting the goal to consolidate

into no more than 80 districts.

Education Commissioner Susan Gendron says all but one of Maine’s

school administrative units submitted a consolidation plan to the

state or has a submission pending. The deadline to file plans was

Dec. 1.

Only School Administrative District 24 — which includes Van

Buren, Hamlin and Cyr Plantation in Aroostook County — refused to

submit a plan.

Gov. John Baldacci proposed consolidation to improve efficiency

and save money. A law was passed last June.

As of noon Friday, 62 plans for regional school units of at

least 1,200 students, and 13 plans for units of less than 1,200

students, had been submitted.
