The Baldacci administration says Maine’s
290 school districts appear to be meeting the goal to consolidate
into no more than 80 districts.
Education Commissioner Susan Gendron says all but one of Maine’s
school administrative units submitted a consolidation plan to the
state or has a submission pending. The deadline to file plans was
Only School Administrative District 24 — which includes Van
Buren, Hamlin and Cyr Plantation in Aroostook County — refused to
submit a plan.
Gov. John Baldacci proposed consolidation to improve efficiency
and save money. A law was passed last June.
As of noon Friday, 62 plans for regional school units of at
least 1,200 students, and 13 plans for units of less than 1,200
students, had been submitted.
