Lawmakers gathered in Augusta on Monday, to talk about a proposed increase that would raise the minimum wage at some point next year, to $7.70 an hour, and to $8.40 in 2009.
It was just back in October that the minimum rose to seven dollars an hour.
Opponents of the legislation say the increase could hurt businesses across Maine: restaurant owners have asked lawmakers to can the bill.
Supporters claim the measure is a good start.
If the labor committee approves the wage increase, Mainers would earn more than the federal minimum wage. That will rise to $7.25 an hour by 2009.
