Maine’s minimum wage increased to $7 an
hour last month.
On Monday, a legislative committee takes up a bill to ratchet
the state’s minimum up further.
A proposal before the Labor Committee seeks to increase the
minimum to $7.70 an hour in 2008 and $8.40 in 2009. After that, the
minimum wage would be adjusted yearly based on the Consumer Price
The proposal comes up as the federal minimum is scheduled to
rise to $7.25 an hour by 2009.
The Labor Committee earlier this year delayed action on minimum
wage bills after a contentious public hearing. The committee is now
giving citizens a second chance to give their views on the issue.
