Another Minimum Wage Hike?

Updated 7 years ago

Maine’s minimum wage increased to $7 an

hour last month.

On Monday, a legislative committee takes up a bill to ratchet

the state’s minimum up further.

A proposal before the Labor Committee seeks to increase the

minimum to $7.70 an hour in 2008 and $8.40 in 2009. After that, the

minimum wage would be adjusted yearly based on the Consumer Price

Index.

The proposal comes up as the federal minimum is scheduled to

rise to $7.25 an hour by 2009.

The Labor Committee earlier this year delayed action on minimum

wage bills after a contentious public hearing. The committee is now

giving citizens a second chance to give their views on the issue.
