Members of the public who want to pay last respects to philanthropist Harold Alfond will get their chance when a memorial service celebrating his life will be held in the spring.
Alfond, who made his fortune in the shoe business and donated tens of millions of dollars to colleges, youth organizations and health centers died Friday at age 93.
The Belgrade resident had been battling cancer for 17 years.
Alfond’s family elected to have a private funeral. The Harold Alfond Foundation, which will administer the bulk of the estate, says the date of the memorial service will be announced in advance to accommodate those who wish to attend.
