Lawmaker Enters Birth Control Debate

A state lawmaker is stepping into the
debate over prescription contraceptives at Portland’s King Middle
School.
Republican State Senator Doug Smith of Dover-Foxcroft wants to
submit a bill that would require parental consent before any Maine
school could give prescription birth control to children 14 or
younger.
As it stands, students need a parent’s permission to go to the
clinic at King Middle School. But state law allows them to receive
confidential care for reproductive health services.
Smith has submitted his bill to legislative leaders, who would
have to allow it to be considered in the 2008 session.
