Storm Bears Down on Maine 

High wind and heavy surf are hitting the
East Coast as remnants of Hurricane Noel bluster northeastward
across the open Atlantic toward New England’s shores.
The worst of the storm was expcted during high tide…and high wind warnings are in effect for coastal Maine,
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey and the eastern tip of New
York’s Long Island.
In southern Maine, winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour are
expected into early Sunday morning, and farther inland gusts could reach 50
miles per hour.
The weather service is also posting a winter storm warning for
northwestern Maine, where rain’s expected to change to snow during
the night and produce accumulations of up to 11 inches before the
weather improves tomorrow. Up to 16 inches could pile up in
elevations above 2,000 feet.
Central Maine Power is reporting outages affecting more than
1,000 customers, more than half of them in the Alfred area and
others in the Brunswick and Rockland areas. Bangor Hydro says more
than 600 customers are without power due to the storm. Along the
