Recall Effort Underway

Portland Republicans are launching a

recall campaign aimed at School Committee members who voted to make

prescription birth control available to students at one of the

city’s three middle schools.

On Monday, activists plan to begin gathering the 500 voter

signatures needed to set the lengthy recall process into motion.

They would then need to collect a total of 3,000 signatures on four

days.

Critics of the 7-to-2 vote say their main concern is that King

Middle School students as young as age 11 could be getting

prescriptions for birth control pills without their parents’

knowledge. Students need parental permission to visit King’s

student health center, but state law provides that reproductive

health care received there is confidential.
