Portland Republicans are launching a
recall campaign aimed at School Committee members who voted to make
prescription birth control available to students at one of the
city’s three middle schools.
On Monday, activists plan to begin gathering the 500 voter
signatures needed to set the lengthy recall process into motion.
They would then need to collect a total of 3,000 signatures on four
Critics of the 7-to-2 vote say their main concern is that King
Middle School students as young as age 11 could be getting
prescriptions for birth control pills without their parents’
knowledge. Students need parental permission to visit King’s
student health center, but state law provides that reproductive
health care received there is confidential.
