The federal plan that would have forced them to make expensive changes to their fishing gear, or to remove their traps from the water, has been put on hold.
That plan was set to go into effect this weekend in order to protect three endangered whales that were spotted off the coast earlier this month.
The government wanted the crews to switch to rope that sinks, so the whales wouldn’t get tangled up.
The feds ordered another aerial survey on Wednesday, and no whales were found, so the gear changes have been cancelled.
The Maine Lobstermen’s Association says this is the best possible outcome for local crews
