Nielsen to Stand Trial

Christian Nielsen’s court-appointed lawyers entered a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect but Nielsen told a judge last week that he preferred to plead guilty to avoid a trial in Oxford County Superior Court.

The judge ruled that Nielsen is competent to stand trial on October 15th, but that doesn’t preclude Nielsen from using an insanity defense.

Defense lawyer Ron Hoffman announced there would be no guilty plea after meeting with Nielsen over the weekend. He says that if Nielsen is to be held in a secure facility, then it should be at the state psychiatric hospital, not prison.
