Millinocket Mill Ceases Use of Phosphoric Acid

An official at Katahdin Paper Company says the mill stopped using phosphoric acid after identifying a suitable alternative to whiten the mill’s paper products.

Phosphoric acid is to blame for the 75-mile blue-green algae bloom that prompted the Penobscot Nation to advise tribal members to stay out of the river until further notice.

No toxic strains have ever been found.
