AUGUSTA – Commissioner Susan Gendron also says the department will be on the phone to the districts that don’t comply with the consolidation law, which is supposed to save more than$36,000,000 in the next fiscal year.
In the State House today, Gendron updated the Appropriations Committee as Friday’s deadline to submit possible merger plans draws near. Gendron says many districts have turned in multiple merger scenarios.
The department says it’s gotten notices from 156 school units, but Gendron says she expects the state to receive 300 different proposals.
By December first, districts have to present their final organization plans, and cities and towns would be expected to vote on whether to approve mergers by January 15th, 2008.
Asked whether any districts are refusing to comply, Gendron said, ":There are some,": but they are ":few and far between.":
