Authorities say a Portland man was
struck and killed by lightning while camping at Baxter State Park.
The victim, identified as 24-year-old Evans Huber of Peak’s
Island, was camping at Katahdin Stream Campground with his younger
brother and mother during a strong thunderstorm when lightning
struck a tree near the campsiteSaturday night.
Park officials said the lightning deflected from the tree and
struck Evans and his brother, 18-year-old Emmett Huber. Baxter
State Park staff responded to the scene and attempted to revive the
elder Huber but were unsuccessful.
Emmett Huber was transported to Millinocket Regional Hospital
with 1st and 2nd degree burns to his feet. Officials said Huber’s
mother, Lois Tiedeken, was uninjured.
According to officials, it was the third lightning-caused
fatality in the park’s recorded history.
