(AP) – The Bangor Daily News says conservationist Roxanne Quimby, an advocating of limited access to wilderness, has reportedly bought some 4,900 acres in two parcels north of Millinocket and west of Stacyville.
Quimby’s nonprofit foundation declined comment on the deals, but an e-mail from Quimby to various parties said the foundation had purchased the parcels last week. State officials, meanwhile, confirmed a tentative agreement to acquire about 8,000 acres that was key to last year’s additiion of Katahdin Lake to Baxter State Park.
But the latest acquisition will only take place if a nonprofit manages to raise more than $6 million in about three months. State Conservation Commissioner Patrick McGowan calls that a ":considerable challenge,": but adds that it’s not an impossibility.
