A Maine state prison inmate serving time for murder will spend a lot more time in jail for plotting to escape.
Gary Watland (44) was sentenced in Knox County Superior Court in Rockland to 35 years in prison for several charges related to the escape plan. He’s already serving 25 years for shooting his neighbor to death in Anson in October of 2004.
Last October, Watland’s wife tried to smuggle a loaded gun into the prison so he could take hostages and escape. Susan Watland was stopped and arrested in the prison parking lot. She was sentenced last month to eight years behind bars.
Tuesday’s sentence means Gary Watland will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.
