WABI – On August 7, 1782, George Washington created the order of the purple heart, a national award to recognize the men and women who have served our country.
On that anniversary, in the hall of flags in Augusta, Governor Baldacci honored 17 individuals for their service with the Maine silver star honorable service medals.
Like the purple heart, the silver star is given to wounded veterans.
Of the recipients, nine were wounded in Iraq, two from World War I, three from Korea and three from Vietnam.
The medal was first awarded to Maine veterans a year ago.
