Half a dozen ambulance crews took the injured to Eastern Maine Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor. Staff at both hospitals have extensive training in disaster response, and worked together to care for the victims.
E.M.M.C. serves as the regional trauma center, so most of the patients to were treated there, while St. Joseph Hospital handled the rest of the day’s emergency calls and ambulance traffic.
E.M.M.C. patient care administrator Karen Clements says it’s because of this teamwork that the injured were taken care of so quickly.
The two hospitals have a dedicated direct phone line so they can stay in touch with each other, keep updated and on top of anything that might develop.
