Convent Burglary Foiled

WABI – Sister Katherine Kelm says she heard a noise coming from one of the windows early Sunday and saw fingers attempting to pry open the screen. She slammed down the window and activated an alarm to summon police.

Police fanned out and called in a search dog from the Oakland Police Department. They didn’t find the suspect, but they’re stepping up patrols.

The Blessed Sacrament convent was the scene of a horrific attack in 1996 by a man who used a statue of the Virgin Mary as a weapon.

That man, March Bechard, was ordered confined indefinitely to a mental health hospital for treatment.
