Duncan Kibet of Kenya raced past
three rivals in the final 600 meters to win today’s T-D Banknorth
Beach to Beacon 10-kilometer road race by six-tenths of a second.
Kibet finished the seaside course in Cape Elizabeth in 27
minutes, 51-point-seven seconds. Fellow Kenyan Evans Cheryiout was
second and John Yuda of Tanzania was third.
Luminata Talpos of Romania dominated the women’s race. She
jumped out to a big lead about two kilometers in and never looked
back, coming in at 32 minutes, 30 seconds.
Ukrainian Natalyia Berkut placed second, followed by Jessica
Ruthe of New Zraland.
More than 4,800 runners from 21 countries and 41 states
completed the course on a cool but humid morning.
The top Maine finisher was Ayalew Taye of Cape Elizabeth, with a
time of 30 minutes, 47 seconds. Emily Levan of Wiscasset, at 35:01,
was — for the third year in a row — the first Maine woman to
cross the finish line.
