Fast Track in Orono 

THE NATIONAL MASTERS OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE TAKING PLACE IN IN ORONO THIS WEEK.

IT’S THE THIRD TIME IN 11 YEARS THE EVENT HAS BEEN HELD AT UMAINE.

TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES including seven former Olympians, FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY COMPETITING.

THERE ARE 34 TRACK ATHLETES WHO HAVE WON CHAMPIONSHIPS AT THE WORLD MASTERS MEET AND OF COURSE THERE ARE MANY MORE WHO ARE HERE DEFENDING THEIR US TITLES.

RUNNING, JUMPING, PENTATHLON AND RACEWALKING TOO.

IN ALL THERE ARE 11 HUNDRED TRACK ATHLETES FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND THERE ARE ABOUT 20 MAINE COMPETITORS AS WELL.

ATHLETES COMPETE WITHIN 5 YEAR AGE GROUPS.

SO FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU ARE 45, 50 OR 55, YOU ARE THE YOUNGEST IN YOUR AGE GROUP.

ONE COMPETITOR HERE THIS WEEK IS PHILIPPA RASCHKER A 60 YEAR OLD FROM GEORGIA.

SHE HAS NATIONAL AND WORLD RECORDS AND FOUR YEARS AGO SHE WAS A FINALIST FOR THE SULLIVAN AWARD AS THE TOP AMATEUR ATHLETE IN THE NATION.

THE OTHER FOUR WERE LEBRON JAMES, DIANNA TARASSI, MICHAEL PHELPS AND APOLO OHNO.
