PROSPECT – Crews blasting ledge to make way for a new path for Rt. 1in Prospect unearthed a granite seam that looks remarkably like a human footprint.
Cindy Kimball of the Bucksport Bay Chamber of Commerce says visitors to the area have noticed the foot that hovers near the top of the ledge and have asked about it.
Kimball suggests that the footprint is a remnant from an old American Indian legend surrounding the spirit Glooscap. She says it was left when the god climbed the mountain to tame the Great Wind Bird.
The manager of the bridge project, Tom Doe, offers a more scientific theory. Doe says the footprint is a remnant of volcanic activity thousands of years ago when molten material from deep inside the earth filled a crack in the rock and hardened into granite.
