A 66-year-old Augusta man was killed in a head-on collision on Route Nine in Chelsea Sunday morning.
Police say a pickup truck driven by Lawrence Armstrong was hit at nine o’clock by a northbound car driven by 29-year-old Derek Sullivan of Randolph that swerved into the oncoming lane.
According to the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department, Lawrence Armstrong was killed on impact.
His wife was flown by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition with pelvic and facial injuries.
Sullivan was also flown to Central Maine Medical Center, where he was in critical condition with internal injuries and compound fractures. A motorcycle rider who was traveling behind Sullivan suffered a broken wrist and ankle when he had to lay down his motorcycle to avoid the accident.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. Police said Sullivan has an active license, but has had a dozen driving convictions, including six speeding violations, and has had his license suspended twice.
